The Recommended Method of Umrah

Umrah is a significant act of worship that requires proper preparation and understanding of its essential steps. The following guide provides a simple overview of the main stages of performing Umrah, from entering Ihram to completing Tawaf, Sa’i and the final haircut.

1. Understanding Miqat: The Boundary for Ihram

Miqat are designated locations where pilgrims enter the state of Ihram before proceeding toward Makkah. The five main Miqat locations traditionally associated with different directions are:

Key Miqat Locations:

1. Dhul-Hulayfah (Abyar Ali):
   For those coming from Madinah.
2. Al-Juhfah:
   For pilgrims arriving from the direction of Syria, Egypt and North Africa.
3. Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sail al-Kabeer):
   For travellers coming from the direction of Najd and eastern regions.
4. Yalamlam:
   For those coming from the direction of Yemen and southern areas.
5. Dhat Irq:
   For pilgrims coming from the direction of Iraq and northern regions.

Pilgrims should learn the applicable Ihram and Miqat requirements for their particular route before travelling. If a pilgrim passes the applicable Miqat without entering Ihram when required, the appropriate religious ruling should be confirmed with a qualified scholar or knowledgeable religious authority.

2. Ihram: Rules and Preparation

(A) Pre-Ihram Sunnah Acts:

1. Take a Ghusl (ritual bath).
2. Trim nails and remove unwanted hair before entering Ihram, where applicable.
3. Apply perfume before entering Ihram.

(B) Ihram Clothing:

• Men:
  Two white unstitched sheets, one for the lower body and one for the upper body.
• Women:
  Modest clothing suitable for Ihram according to the applicable religious guidance.

(C) Niyyah (Intention) and Talbiyah:

• Make the intention for Umrah:
  The intention is made in the heart and the pilgrim begins the rites of Umrah.
• Recite Talbiyah frequently:

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka la sharika laka Labbayk, Innal-hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.”

Men generally recite the Talbiyah audibly while women recite it softly, according to commonly followed guidance.

3. Restrictions During Ihram

While in Ihram, pilgrims must observe the restrictions associated with the state of Ihram. These include avoiding:

1. Cutting hair or nails.
2. Using perfume after entering Ihram.
3. Hunting or harming permitted wildlife.
4. Sexual relations and inappropriate or argumentative behaviour.
5. For men, wearing clothing prohibited during Ihram. Women should observe the applicable rules regarding clothing and coverings.

Some violations of Ihram restrictions may require compensation (Fidyah), depending on the nature of the violation and the applicable religious ruling. If a violation occurs, consult a qualified scholar for guidance.

4. Tawaf: Circling the Kaaba

• Perform 7 rounds around the Kaaba, beginning from the area of the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).
• Men:
  Raml, walking briskly, is traditionally observed in the first three rounds of Tawaf when applicable.
• At the Black Stone, pilgrims may say “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar” when beginning the round.

Istilam:
If possible, the Black Stone may be kissed. When the area is crowded, pilgrims may gesture toward it instead. Avoid pushing or causing harm to other pilgrims.

5. Pray 2 Rak’ahs After Tawaf

After completing Tawaf, pray two Rak’ahs where reasonably possible. Many pilgrims pray near Maqam Ibrahim, while the prayer can be performed elsewhere in the mosque if the area is crowded or access is difficult.

Reciting Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas is traditionally recommended in these two Rak’ahs.

6. Sa’i: Walking Between Safa and Marwah

• Begin at Safa, face the Kaaba and make appropriate remembrance and dua.
• Complete 7 trips between Safa and Marwah, beginning at Safa and finishing at Marwah.
• Men:
  Walk briskly or run between the designated green markers where applicable.

Pilgrims may make dua and remember Allah throughout Sa’i. There is no need to restrict personal supplication to one particular wording.

7. Shaving or Trimming Hair (Halq/Taqsir)

• Men:
  Shaving the head (Halq) or trimming the hair (Taqsir) completes this final stage of Umrah. The preferred practice can vary according to religious guidance.
• Women:
  Trim a portion of the hair according to the applicable religious guidance.

8. Completion of Umrah

After completing the required rites and the haircut, the Umrah is completed and the restrictions of Ihram come to an end according to the applicable ruling.

“Allahumma aj’alhu ‘Umratan mabrooratan, wa dhanban maghfooran, wa sa’yan mashkooran.”

Pilgrims may continue with dua, dhikr and other acts of worship after completing Umrah.
